2011-12 Staff Bios
Ron Strickland: Director Coach Strick’ has been the Director of Cape Fear VBC since it formed in 1979. He took over the reins of Hoggard HS’s Varsity Volleyball Program in 1983 where he has led the Vikings to 23 Conference titles in 27 seasons, 5 State 4A title appearances, and is currently #2 on the All-Time Wins list for North Carolina High Schools, #1 among active coaches. He currently also coaches Roland Grise MS. Impact Certified 1982, CAP I certified.
Ericka Riddle: Assistant Director, Second Site, North Brunswick Coach Ericka is in her 6th year with Cape Fear. She has coached an assortment of teams including 16–National, 17’s and 15’s. She is currently taking a hiatus from coaching to pursue her Masters degree. This is her third year as an Assistant Director. Impact Certified 2004.
A.J. Bonetti: Assistant Director, Player Skill Development and Coach Training/Development. This season Coach Bonetti will take a limited role year with Cape Fear as a Coach Development Trainer. He currently is the 1st Assistant at UNCW and has previously coached in Virginia at the Club, HS and College levels. See his full Bio.
Leslie Barker: This is the 2nd year at Cape Fear for Coach Leslie. She has played 9 years of HS and College level volleyball, including 3 years as a DS at Concordia University, Irvine California. She has coached with Desert Sports Club out of Desert Palms, Ca. along with several years of High School and Middle School coaching. Impact Certified 2010
Stephanie Stull Coach Stephanie has 12 years playing experience including 2 years on scholarship at Black Hills State U. Impact Certified 2008, she has 3 years coaching experience at the Club level, coaching in 2009 at Pike’s Peak VBC with a 15’s team that won their division at the Colorado Cross Roads National Qualifier, winning a bid to Nationals, along with a 2nd at the Baltimore NQ. Stephanie’s stint at Pike’s Peak included 1 year at 14 National level and 1 year at the 15 Elite level. This is her second year with Cape Fear, originally planned as a 17’s coach, when she tried out and made the UNCW team, she had to take a role as a floater coach. As a younger player, Stephanie assisted with the Summer Program at Manitou Springs High School 2 years and ran it 2 years. Her playing experience stretches over 13 yrs, with 9 years for clubs in Colorado. Her 17's year she played for Colorado Altitude and played at the Junior Olympics in Atlanta: at the tournament we won our bid and she was named MVP. She holds all setting records for her high school, and was an all-conference choice 3 years, an all-state 2 years, and academic all-state 3 years. She played 2 years on scholarship at Black Hills State University. While playing there I played in two National tournaments taking 12th in 2008 and 26th in 2009. I was named to the all-conference academic for the DAC in 2008 and 2009 and to the All-American Academic Team in both 2008 and 2009. She played 1 spring season with UNCW volleyball and will continue to help the program as a practice player this coming spring.
Heather Emborsky Coach Heather has 4 years HS as well as 4 years Club experience. She has played for 2 years at CFCC, where she was Player of the Year both years, helping lead her team to 2 appearances in the NAIA Nationals. Heather coached 1 year with Wahines VBC in Carteret County. This is her sthird year with Cape Fear. Impact Certified 2008.
Jim Ross This is Coach Jim’s second season with Cape Fear, but he is certainly not new to the sport. He has played competitively over 30 years, 1984 and 1985 Men’s Open Champs in the Carolina Region. Member of the CR Board of Directors, 1984-1987. Four years Head Coach at Lexington HS. Coach Jim brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our club.
Caitlin Barnum Coach Caitlin has played for 8 years, 5 years of Club ball and 2 years collegiate experience at CFCC. Caitlin was an assistant with Coach Jeanne Lambert (former UNCW and CFCC coach) with our 15-National team. Last year, she took the reins of a 15-Regional team. This year, she was the Head Varsity Coach at New Hanover HS, and will take over one of our 15-National teams. She played 5 years with Wahine VBC. Impact Certified 2010
Caroline Merrill Coach Caroline is in her second year with Cape Fear and has 10 years playing experience including 2 years as a DS at Brevard College on scholarship. Her HS team, Hendersonville was 3 time 1A champions, while she played 5 years at Biltmore VBC. She has coached two years with Biltmore VBC working with 16’s and 17’s. Impact Certified 2008.
Nick Faddoul Nick played Club ball at the University of Arkansas in the 80’s, continuing to coach at Ozark VBC well into the 90’s. He has played competitively indoors and in outdoor doubles, but has moved to triathlons for the last 13 years. He has coached with Cape Fear for the last 3 years at both 14’s and 15’s.
Katie Tatum Katie is an NC Elite Alumnae who played under Coaches Gary DeJames and Scott Crisco for a total of five seasons. She was a recruited outside hitter at University of Central Florida before transferring to UNC Wilmington as a Student Assistant due to a career ending injury. Katie has a tremendous volleyball background and a number of successes throughout her career. Katie was named PAC6 Conference Player of the Year in her junior and senior seasons and a two-time NC 4A State Champion as well as a four-time PAC6 Conference Champion which included an undefeated league record during her senior run. Katie holds multiple NC regional champion honors. She was a participant of USAV High Performance Program making the National A2 Team in 2010. Katie was an avid outdoor player during her high school career and holds many tournament wins and a regional championship and national bid for sand doubles. Katie is currently working on her degree in Education at UNC Wilmington and is broadening her knowledge of the game working under Coaches Bambenek and Bonetti of UNCW.
Dev/Pro Coaching Staff Head Coach: Scott Adams Coach Scott has been playing and coaching volleyball for 24 years. After playing 4 years of high school and club volleyball in Pittsburgh, PA, he went on to Washington and Jefferson College where he founded the men’s club volleyball program and also served as Assistant Coach to the women’s intercollegiate program. After graduation, he continued playing club volleyball while attending graduate school at Purdue University. Scott has been playing indoor and outdoor volleyball ever since. This is his second year working with the Dev Program.
