Special Event—Dev/Pro End-O-Season Pizza and watch some Volleyball at Hoggard.

We had our End-o-Season get together last Sunday at Hoggard. Look at the tournament page for info about it.

We had our last Dev/Pro practice/tournament on 3/31.

We will start up again next season around mid-November.

I would appreciate any suggestions you have for how we can improve the program. The one thing I would like to see next year is to have all players complete the registration process and attend the reffing clinic so that we are able to participate in the full JO’s experience, as in travel to at least one away tournament.

While I did encourage all to register, since we were mostly doing everything in-house, it was not an absolute requirement. Last year, we had about 20 who registered and we were able to take 2 teams to a tournament in Fayetteville. It was lots of fun and a great growth experience. Unfortunately, with only 12 having completed registration and not enough having attended the reffing clinic, we were unable to attend. Although I did have us entered, and Coach Suzanne tried valiantly to come up with at least 8 who could travel, it just wasn’t in the cards. Let’s not miss it next year!

Dev/Pro Basic Concepts and Information

The CFV Developmental Program is for our younger players. This program offers the younger, maybe smaller, maybe new to the game, player an opportunity to gain some skills, learn the game and compete in a low stress, easy on the parent environment. The program begins with training sessions,  then moves into a series of short tournaments and concludes with the girls playing in an full day-long JO’s tournament.

Our staff for the Dev/Pro includes 5 current UNCW players. These girls are giving back to the sport that has been a large part of their lives. Each of them started in a club program that helped them get to where they are today.

We will have some special rules for the Dev/Pro teams to encourage longer rallies and to prevent the games being dominated by players who can server with force and consistency.

Dev/Pro Rule Modifications

1. Starting 3/9, we will go to full size and weight balls instead of the VolleyLites. This will help us get ready for the possible upcoming travel tournament. Information on that  below the Tournament Schedule Grid.

2. Matches will be single games to 30 points.

3. Each player will be allowed to serve a maximum of 3 times.

4. To encourage 3-touch rallies rather than “serving games” or “just get it over”, we will put in a system where each team that makes 3 touches on the ball and gets it over the net will score 1 point on that rally.

5. Each team  will score a point for handling the ball and forcing the other team to make an error.

6. This means that there could be 3 points scored on one serve (though most of the time this will not happen.

Example: Team “A” serves, Team “B” plays the ball with 3 touches and gets it back over the net (1 Point), Team “A” plays it using 3 touches (1 Point) and  gets it over to Team “B”, who plays the ball with 3 touches (0 Points, only get points for 1-3 touch play) and scores when Team “A” hits the ball out of bounds. Team “B” scores a point for winning the rally (both teams earned 1 Point each during the rally for using 3 touches)

The score is team “A”-1, Team “B”-2 and Team “B” is going back to serve.

6. This will be a little complicated, but we hope it will encourage players/teams to get the concept of “PASS-SET-HIT” rather than the PE class “just get it over the net” mindset.

Parents are encouraged to yell, scream, and otherwise positively support your teams. Remember that for many of these girls, this is their first experience with this sport, and, believe it of not, this is a very hard sport to play. While about 1 out of 4 houses has a basketball goal, I doubt you can recall anyone with a Volleyball court in their backyard.
