Program Summary

¨ Our Developmental program offers the younger players opportunities to learn the sport in a low pressure environment.

¨ Players will be divided into roughly equal “team units” and will work with a coaching staff of UNCW players. Players may be moved to balance the teams.

¨ The teams will enter at least one Regional tournament chosen for schedule and location. It will NOT be in Wilmington.

Price: $310.00 (in 07-08), 08-09 TBD

¨ The CFV Developmental Program is for our younger players. This program offers the younger, maybe smaller, maybe new to the game, player an opportunity to gain some skills, learn the game and compete in a low stress, easy on the parent environment. The program begins with training sessions, then moves into a series of short tournaments and concludes with the girls playing in an full day-long JO’s tournament.

¨ In 2007-08, our staff for the Dev/Pro was directed by Suzanne Biagini, and included 5 current UNCW players as team coaches. These girls are giving back to the sport that has been a large part of their lives. Each of them started in a club program that helped them get to where they are today. The staff for this year should be similar.

¨ The program will start with basic practices and skill development for the first few weekends. In late January, early February (to be determined by the coaching staff), teams will be formed and inter-squad tournament play will begin. This will not involve travel. Later in the season, we will attempt to travel to travel to at least one in-Region tournament. This will be a day trip. More later.

¨ We will have some special rules for the Dev/Pro teams to encourage longer rallies and to prevent the games being dominated by players who can server with force and consistency.

Starting young…..catching up with California!

Dev/Pro Rule Modifications

1. Matches will be single games to 30 points.

2. Each player will be allowed to serve a maximum of 3 times.

3. To encourage 3-touch rallies rather than “serving games” or “just get it over”, we will put in a system where each team that makes 3 touches on the ball and gets it over the net will score 1 point on that rally.

4. Each team  will score a point for handling the ball and forcing the other team to make an error.

5. This means that there could be 3 points scored on one serve (though most of the time this will not happen.

Example: Team “A” serves, Team “B” plays the ball with 3 touches and gets it back over the net (1 Point), Team “A” plays it using 3 touches (1 Point) and  gets it over to Team “B”, who plays the ball with 3 touches (0 Points, only get points for 1-3 touch play) and scores when Team “A” hits the ball out of bounds. Team “B” scores a point for winning the rally (both teams earned 1 Point each during the rally for using 3 touches)

The score is team “A”-1, Team “B”-2 and Team “B” is going back to serve.

6. This will be a little complicated, but we hope it will encourage players/teams to get the concept of “PASS-SET-HIT” rather than the PE class “just get it over the net” mindset.

7. Parents are encouraged to yell, scream, and otherwise positively support your teams. Remember that for many of these girls, this is their first experience with this sport, and, believe it of not, this is a very hard sport to play. While about 1 out of 4 houses has a basketball goal, I doubt you can recall anyone with a Volleyball court in their backyard.
